3) We interpret Scripture collectively
Anyone can take any one verse of the Bible and run with it, while forming a doctrine on the way. If I want, I can take the passage of scripture where someone asks Jesus what they have to do to have eternal life. After conversing about the matter, Jesus finally says, “Sell all your possessions and give it to the poor. Then, come follow me.” If someone wanted, they could take this verse alone and misinterpret it to mean that the criterion for entering into heaven hinges upon whether or not we have sold our wealth.
So how do we interpret scripture collectively? Consider the following:
In Deut. 24:1-3, we can see Moses discussing how someone may be able to get a divorce. If that is the only verse we look at, it appears that God is okay with divorce. However, when reading other passages, we see things differently.
Malachi 2:16 says, “God hates divorce.” What does this mean though in light of the passage in Deut.?
In Matthew 19:8, Jesus says, “Moses permitted you to divorce your wives because your hearts were hard.” First, from this passage of text we see that Jesus recognizes that the Law was given by God, but through human means when he says “Moses permitted.” Therefore, as we have discussed, Moses’ humanity would not be negated. Second, he provides clarity that God was never pleased with divorce. It was permitted out of the hardness of people’s hearts - thus respecting their freedom. This is a prime example of how God will allow humanity to make mistakes despite His wishes.
If we take one passage of scripture without looking at the whole, we will easily find ourselves misinterpreting it.

[Note that after God promises the Israelites a victory against Babylon, the Israelites actually get their butts kicked by them in the next chapter. So much for an all-knowing and all-powerful God.]
